A short, honest privacy policy

We collect as little as possible, never sell anything, and try to write this the way we'd explain it to a friend at the apiary. The full policy is below — anchors on the left jump you to each section.

01

Who we are

Tarkine Honey Co. (ABN 12 345 678 901) is a family-owned apiary based at 142 Arthur River Road, Tarkine NW, Tasmania 7330. When this policy says "we", "us" or "our", that's the people writing to you from the packing shed.

This policy explains what personal information we collect when you visit tarkinehoney.com.au or buy from us, how we use it, and what choices you have. We follow the Australian Privacy Principles set out in the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth).

02

What we collect

The information we collect depends on what you do on the site:

  • When you place an order — your name, postal and email addresses, phone number, and the products in your cart. Your payment card details go directly to our payment processor; we never see or store them.
  • When you create an account — the same as above, plus a password (hashed).
  • When you subscribe to the journal — your email address and first name.
  • When you contact us — anything you choose to write in your message.
  • Automatically, from any visitor — your IP address, the pages you view, the device and browser you use, and the time you arrived. This is standard web-server logging.

We do not knowingly collect information about anyone under 16.

03

How we use your information

We use what you give us for the obvious things:

  • To fulfil and ship your order, and update you about it.
  • To answer your messages and resolve issues.
  • To send the seasonal harvest letter — but only if you opted in. Every email has a one-click unsubscribe.
  • To meet our tax, accounting and consumer-law obligations.
  • To keep the site working, secure, and free of fraud.

We do not sell your personal information. We don't profile you for advertising on third-party platforms.

04

Cookies and analytics

We use a small number of cookies to make the site work and to understand what's popular:

  • Essential cookies — required for the cart, the checkout, and saving your wishlist locally. These cannot be turned off.
  • Analytics — aggregated, anonymised page-view counts so we know which jars people are reading about. No personal identifiers are linked to it.

Your browser controls let you block cookies, but if you block the essential ones the cart and wishlist will stop working.

05

Who we share it with

We only share your details with the small set of partners that help us run the shop:

  • Payment processors (Stripe, PayPal) — to take your payment securely.
  • Shipping carriers (Australia Post, DHL, NZ Post) — to deliver your jar.
  • Email service — to send transactional and (if opted-in) marketing emails.
  • Hosting & site tools — the server that runs the website.
  • Government agencies — only if we're required to by law (a court order, a tax audit, etc.).

Each partner only sees the minimum they need to do their job, and is bound by their own privacy obligations.

06

How long we keep it

Order records: seven years, to meet Australian tax law. Account profiles: as long as the account exists, plus 12 months after inactivity. Email subscribers: until you unsubscribe. Contact-form messages: 24 months from the last reply. Web server logs: 90 days.

You can ask us to delete anything beyond what we're legally required to keep.

07

How we keep it safe

The site runs over HTTPS. Passwords are hashed (we can't see them, even on our end). Payment data never touches our servers. Access to customer records inside the business is limited to the two of us who pack and ship.

If a data breach ever did happen, we would notify you and the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner as quickly as we reasonably can.

08

Your rights

You have the right to:

  • Ask for a copy of the personal information we hold about you.
  • Correct anything that's wrong or out of date.
  • Ask us to delete your information (subject to legal record-keeping above).
  • Withdraw consent to marketing emails at any time.
  • Make a complaint to us — and, if we don't resolve it, to the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner.

To exercise any of these, just email us at hello@tarkinehoney.com.au. We aim to respond within five business days.

09

If your data leaves Australia

Some of the tools we use (the email service, the hosting platform) store data in the United States or the European Union. Where that happens, we only work with providers who offer protections at least equivalent to the Australian Privacy Principles.

10

Changes to this policy

We may update this policy from time to time — usually because a new tool, law or partner enters the picture. When that happens, we'll change the "last updated" date at the top of this page and, for anything material, post a note on the homepage. The date for material changes will be at least 30 days before they take effect.
